Description: The Kipuka Puaulu Trail takes you on a stroll through an upland mesic forest oasis surrounded by more recent lava flows from Mauna Loa. This trail follows a gentle incline. Sights of interest along this trail are Kipuka, old-growth forest of koa and ‘ohi’a, birds and insects.

Description: The Kilauea Iki Trail descends 400 feet through rain forest, crosses the crater floor, passes Pu’u Pua’i cinder cone and returns via the crater’s rim. Sights of interest on this trail are the rain forest, birds, insects, 1959 lava lake, steam vents, cinder and spatter cone. You should bring water. Expect wet and windy weather and some steep and rocky terrain. Follow the rock cairns across the crater floor.

Description: The Pipiwai Trail is a moderate 4 mile round trip trail to Waimoku Falls. It winds upslope along the edge of Pipiwai Stream past several waterfalls and pools. The remains of a sugar mill dam, irrigation systems and flumes of the late 1800's can be seen in several places along the trail. The Makahiku Overlook is just 0.5 miles up the trail and looks down on a beautiful 184 foot waterfall. Continue your hike over foot bridges above the stream and through the bamboo forest. The trail ends near the base of the 400 foot Waimoku Falls. Be prepared for rain, mud and slippery mosses. Mosquitoes are very friendly here so insect repellent is a must for this hike.

Description: The Pu’u Loa Petroglyphs Trail travel along the coast and traverses older lava flows to one of Hawaii’s most extensive petroglyph fields. Sights of interest along this trail are petroglyphs and pahoehoe lava. Petroglyphs are fragile. Stay on the boardwalk walking on the lava surface will fragment petroglyphs and destroy them. You should bring water, wear sunglasses and a hat.

Description: The Pa Kaoao Trail is a short trail of less than 0.5 miles that leads to the top of Pa Kaoao, a small cinder cone. This is one of the highest vantage points in the park and this trail offers excellent views of the Wilderness Area. Stone shelters built by the early Hawaiians that explored Haleakala long ago are still visible from the trail.
